Embracing Wanderlust: My unforgettable journey through Italy!

updated entry – 7 Aug 2023

I firmly believe that travel is an essential experience if one has the means. It doesn’t require luxury; budget trips impart invaluable lessons too!

March 2023 marked an adventure with my 2 girls – their first European trip! Flying Singapore Airlines was an amazing treat.

Two weeks in Florence and Rome were enchanting, but Florence stole my heart with its walkable streets and captivating charm.

Ponte Vecchio turned us into magpies, captivated by shining treasures. The Accademia Gallery’s lifelike statue of David left us in awe of Michelangelo’s mastery. A TikTok-famous sandwich spot All’ Antico Vinaio- lived up to the hype, a divine pistachio cream and mortadella pairing was my choice that day.

Venturing to San Gimignano and Pisa was awe-inspiring, with medieval vibes and the Leaning Tower’s surreal presence.

Food delights at Trattorria Marione’s mouthwatering steak and sinful truffle cream pasta. Osteria Pastella’s in-house-made pasta was divine, flambe-performed and served in a giant cheese wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano!

Rome, impressive but not beckoning my return. The Vatican City’s humbling aura, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the breathtaking Sistine Chapel left lasting impressions. Fontana di Trevi wishes added to the magic.

A Michelin-star dinner at Aroma, overlooking the Colosseum, was out-of-this-world. Yet, Rome’s streets showed signs of wear, and vigilance against pickpockets was paramount.

Next time, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii’s ruins, Venice’s winding canals, and Milan’s fashion await. Until then, Ciao Bella!

A Flavorful Tribute to Singapore’s 58th Birthday: Celebrating with Food and Gratitude

Entry – 10 Aug 2023

I celebrated Singapore’s 58th birthday in the most delectable way possible – through a delightful feast that embodies the nation’s rich culture, culinary diversity and spirit of unity. What better way to honor the remarkable journey of this small yet thriving island nation than by gathering around a table filled with flavours that reflect its history and aspirations?

For the midday celebration, a simple yet exquisite charcuterie board took center stage. This arrangement of flavours brought together favorites from around the world, each element contributing to the symphony of taste. Creamy burrata, lovingly drizzled with a balsamic reduction brought home from my recent travels to Italy, transported taste buds to European landscapes. The harmonious companionship of Meiji crackers, beef pepperoni, Espresso and Lavender dusted cheese from the Beehive Cheese Company in Utah, sweet pomegranate seeds, and Kyoto Grapes made for a truly global ensemble. And let’s not forget the homemade “hot honey,” a staple born out of the love for both sweet and spicy – now a beloved condiment in the pantry.

Sharing a toast, the celebration was elevated by the presence of Butterfly Pea Gin from the Brass Lion Distillery. This local micro-distillery encapsulates Singapore’s spirit as a cultural melting pot by utilizing Southeast Asian botanicals. Inspired by the historic spice trade that once defined the nation’s heritage, the gin served as a reminder that progress is built upon honouring traditions while embracing innovation.

As the sun began to set, dinner carried the festivities forward with a homemade Mee Soto, a dish with Malaysian roots, infused with Singaporean creativity. Drawing from Chef Wan’s recipe, dried chilies were added to give the dish a fiery kick, showcasing the dynamic and adaptable nature of Singaporean cuisine. Accompanying the mee soto was the quintessential “Begedil,” a potato cake adorned with spring onions and crispy fried shallots. This humble yet hearty combination is a testament to the unity and friendship between Singapore and its neighboring Malaysia.

The celebration of this special day underscored Singapore’s role as a melting pot of cultures, where diverse culinary influences are embraced and celebrated. It exemplified the openness of the Singaporean spirit – a willingness to learn from and collaborate with neighbours, fostering a harmonious coexistence.

Despite its size and the absence of natural resources, Singapore has carved a unique path to prosperity, made possible through determination, innovation, and the collective effort of its citizens. The red passport, symbolizing citizenship, stands as a mark of honour and a reminder of the nation’s enduring values.

And no tribute would be complete without acknowledging the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew (Singapore’s 1st Prime Minister). His visionary leadership paved the way for Singapore’s transformation into a global success story. The celebrations were infused with gratitude for his contributions and a sense of purpose to continue his legacy.

One sentiment prevails: Singapore is not just a place, it’s a feeling of belonging, a sense of unity and a celebration of all that makes it unique. Happy birthday, Singapore – a home to cherish and a journey to celebrate!
